A small town in a small country in the middle of Europe and the filmmaking world. Over the course of its seventy-year history the Locarno Film Festival has turned its host town into the eye and stage of international auteur cinema. For eleven days, in the month of August, the shores of Lake Maggiore become the home and screen of the film industry. Every facet of filmmaking, from those who work in cinema to those who watch it, enters a dialogue across a program of hundreds of features and shorts.Thousands of film lovers have the chance to grow alongside the works that the Locarno Film Festival offers and promotes each year. Sometimes it’s a smaller, almost non-existent work, sometimes it’s gigantic, or rediscovered, engaging freely in a dialogue.

One can view these films in a small theater or as part of the crowd of 8000 in Piazza Grande, one of the largest open-air venues in the world. And let’s not forget the stars, which shine on the screen and in our eyes. Throughout its 71 editions Locarno has played host to legends like Marlene Dietrich, Faye Dunaway, Anthony Hopkins or Jean-Luc Godard; beloved performers like Susan Sarandon or Adrien Brody; strong minds such as Ken Loach or Werner Herzog. Plus, Quentin Tarantino, Juliette Binoche, Edward Norton, Andy Garcia, Todd Haynes, Ethan Hawke and Meg Ryan.
